Cold Storage might be the horror-comedy jolt I didn't know I needed. After feeling like I was crawling out of the cinematic void of Gale: Yellow Brick Road, this one plays like a spiritual rebound, loud, gross, chaotic, and refreshingly self-aware. If last year's Ick walked so weird science horror-comedy could run, Cold Storage sprints straight into exploding fungal madness. Directed by Jonny Campbell and adapted by David Koepp from his own novel, the film centers on what should be a boring overnight shift at a self-storage facility. Instead, it turns into ground zero for a government screw-up decades in the making. What starts as an investigation into an annoying dying battery beep... yes, that smoke alarm chirp that makes you question your sanity, spirals into the discovery of a long-forgotten containment unit buried beneath the facility. Only it's not a smoke alarm that's dying. It's a biological failsafe... and it's about to shut down. This rapidly mutating fungus sealed away in 1978 by government agents Robert Quinn (Liam Neeson) and Trini Romano (Lesley Manville), begins creeping through the facility as temperatures rise. What follows is a brain-controlling, body-bursting nightmare that turns storage renters and unlucky employees into twitchy, boom-prone zombie drones. It's gross. It's ridiculous. And it's wildly entertaining. Georgina Campbell brings grounded intensity as Naomi Williams, anchoring the film emotionally while chaos unfolds around her. Joe Keery, as Travis "Teacake" Meacham, once again proves he has that lovable chaos energy dialed in perfectly. His performance balances awkward humor with real panic in a way that feels effortless. Neeson leans into the absurdity here with his comedic timing. His straight-faced delivery in the middle of escalating fungal insanity is some of the film's best humor. Paired with Lesley Manville's dry wit, the two veteran actors add a strange credibility to the madness. They're the last remaining witnesses to the parasite's original outbreak, and when the containment system begins its shutdown cycle, it's up to them and a couple of self-storage employees who definitely did not sign up for this to stop history from repeating itself. Cold Storage strikes a solid balance between practical effects and CGI. The body horror sequences, bursting spores, twitching limbs, fungal tendrils creeping through air vents are tactile enough to feel real without over-relying on digital gloss. If I have one complaint, it's that I wanted more of the creeping dread: more time watching the fungus spread, infect random objects, mutate in unpredictable ways. The setup is so fun that you almost wish the film let it simmer just a little longer before going full explosion mode. Tonally, the film lands comfortably between The Thing and Shaun of the Dead, with a sprinkle of Return of the Living Dead chaos. It understands that horror-comedy works best when the horror is played seriously and the comedy comes from character reactions not winks at the camera. And for the most part, it nails that balance. In the end, Cold Storage is exactly what it promises: a fast, funny, occasionally gnarly creature feature with enough heart and humor to make the mayhem worth it. It's a reminder that sometimes the best horror-comedies come from simple premises, like a dying battery beep in the middle of the night and asking, "What if that noise meant the world was about to end?"
