I watched Coyotes (2025) in theaters last night. The storyline follows a storm that hits Hollywood, leaving a wealthy family in the Hollywood Hills trapped in their home during a sudden coyote outbreak. With limited resources, no power, and little chance of outside help, the family must fight to survive. But why are the coyotes specifically targeting the Hollywood Hills? The film is directed by Colin Minihan (Grave Encounters) and stars Justin Long (Jeepers Creepers), Kate Bosworth (Superman Returns), Brittany Allen (The Boys), and Katherine McNamara (Arrow). This is a "when animals attack" dark comedy with a mix of horror and humor. While it has a few entertaining moments, it's not a must-see or a film to approach with high expectations. There are stronger entries in this subgenre-Lake Placid, Piranha, and Arachnophobia, to name a few. The storyline and setting feel generic, and although the cast is solid, the comedic elements often feel forced. On the positive side, the horror elements are worthwhile. The CGI coyotes look surprisingly good, and the bite scenes feature intense and effective gore. The corpses are impressively crafted, with standout makeup work. A memorable grill scene and a creative shark cage sequence add some flair. Still, despite these moments, the movie never rises above average and won't stand out either as a notable horror film of the year or as a memorable entry in the animal-attack category.
