Crime 101 clearly wants to be in the same league as Heat and Thief. You can feel that influence in the moody synth score, the coastal night photography and the quiet standoffs between cops and criminals. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it just feels too much like imitation. Chris Hemsworth plays against type as a more introverted thief. I appreciate the attempt, but he never fully disappears into the role. You still see the movie star. Mark Ruffalo brings the most weight to the film. The first half builds tension well. However, the second half leans too much on coincidences and soft resolutions. Big reveals land with a shrug. It looks slick and sounds great, but never quite grips you the way it should, making it solid and watchable, just not particularly memorable.
