This is a story with two main strands - the past and the possession. These components are both revealed early and I'm not spoiling anything here. There are flashbacks to Elise's previous life in the Cult of the Latter Days Saints, and hints of her interaction with a mysterious entity which might just still be hanging around. Unfortunately these elements feel jammed together and never successfully merge - transitions between the present and Elise's half-remembered scenes in the past feel consistently awkward and jarring. The one thing this movie does manage well is atmosphere. It steadily builds layers of tension from the bizarre fugue behaviour of the main protagonist, Elizabeth Cullen, who plays her part well, to the flashbacks of awkwardly posed and oddly dressed cultists whose very postures conjure a feeling of unnatural threat, even if one gets the impression they were filmed with the camera lens smeared with Vaseline. The surprisingly lush Australian scenery is well shot and a lonely chapel and disturbingly regular pine forest successfully evoke a feeling of dread. What seem like largely practical special effects are well made and convincing. Unfortunately, though, the film feels it necessary to stuff itself with every single horror trope in existence, particularly those requiring the protagonists to repeatedly do the stupidest of things that make no sense, obliging you to throw objects at the screen in annoyance. And this aspect builds throughout the second half of the film to the point of making it unwatchable for me. If you enjoy screaming "No, don't go in the spooky chapel", "No, don't go in the spooky cellar", "No, don't wander off alone into the dark and spooky forest", "For God's sake RUN AWAY" at people who have apparently never seen a horror film in their lives and possess all the self-preservation of a pigeon, then this movie is for you.
