I highly value an original themed movie, so I think "H for Hawk" is great. I've seen dogs and depression (multiple times) but never hawks and depression. And hawks makes for a significantly different movie. I also liked that the movie didn't try to answer every question about grief and depression. It also didn't overwork the bird metaphors. I think this is best suited for a subject as personal as grief and depression. My only criticism is that the movie was too ambiguous about her inner struggles. We really don't know what she is thinking for most of the movies. Claire Foy and Brendan Gleeson as father and daughter had a very believable and wonderful dynamic, which explained her devastation. The movie avoids melodrama and I found it believable from beginning to end. The plot is slow but mostly kept my attention. The cinematography was beautiful but the shots of the hawk hunting were spectacular. I would have liked even more. I haven't read the original book but the birding parts seemed accurate and were interesting.
