Description
Franklin Shepard is a talented Broadway composer who abandons his theater career and all his friends in New York in order to produce films in Los Angeles. The story begins at the height of his Hollywood fame and moves backwards in time, showing snapshots of the most important moments in Frank's life that shaped the man he is today. A live recording of the 2024 Tony Award-winning Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth's musical, filmed at the Hudson Theatre in New York City.

Look, I really wanted to like this. I love Daniel and Jonathan and was waiting for this to stream so could see it. But I have never been a fan of Sondheim's music despite loving West Side Story. I've come to realize that (for me) it's the Leonard Bernstein music that makes WSS great. If you just read the lyrics on their own they are somewhat banal. The song Maria is a lovely ballad musically but how many times can you sing Maria over and over again? Anyway I'm halfway through Merrily and while the performances are fantastic, the music is just so bad. This was a flop when it first debuted, and I can see why. There is a large contingent of Sondheim fans in the Broadway universe that loves this stuff, but I guess I'm not one of them.
