I have a like/hate relationship with this show, and after watching the season 2 premiere I was able to confirm my suspicions. It's the children. They do a poor job of writing the children. There are issues with the adult characters, but overall the adults are enjoyable. Their stories are relatable (even if you have no children), and the characters are generally likeable. It's obvious that they are going to make some of the single parents get together and then break up as a part of the story progress. I'm not a fan of that, but I can deal. What I cannot deal with is the children. Let's start with the worst. Rory. His first episode was awesome, and he was an adorable kid with great self-expression who looked up to Douglas. After that, they wrote him like a mean drag queen. Bianca Del Rory as far as I am concerned. Not only is this kid mean but he betrays his friends with no consequence or parental discussion (see the episode when Sophie has a crush for an example). He gossips with his mom and this behavior is totally encouraged. I love that Rory's parents are affirming of him, but that doesn't mean that they are not supposed to be parents. I want to see them encourage loyalty and integrity from him. Not actively engage in mean gossip about the people close to them. Sophie and Graham are cute but also too grown up. Let these kids act like kids and not therapists for the adults. I must say, I love the twins. Actually, Douglas and his family are my favorite characters. This surprised me because they are the last family I thought I would connect with so much. They have their difficult sides, but they are also loveable. The twins are also unrealistically skilled, but I'll admit that it's fun to watch. It's even more fun to see how much Douglas appreciates and encourages their skillsets. This second season premiere showed me that the children hurt my enjoyment of the show. I wish they'd write the children in a way that either shows them being kids or addresses the children's behavior when they act like mean and disloyal adults.
