It's a great film for fans who just want to be dazzled with Illumination's jaw dropping animation and seeing all your beloved Nintendo characters on the big screen. However I will admit, with how much content has been stuffed into this film on a shorter run time, it's hard to feel like there's anything truly cohesive going on at times which can leave you feeling a bit detached. The amount of effort and dedication committed to building the worlds we see are truly something to behold but before you even have time to blink, it's on to the next scene. Rinse and repeat. Same goes for character development which really isn't much to begin with. In several instances, we're given interesting character arcs that seemingly never really go anywhere in the end. It's like they wanted to make sure this movie wasn't just purely fun and action so they sprinkled in these brief emotional beats that never really deliver when you couple it with how little time you're given with some of these characters in the first place. Overall though, it's still a fun movie and you can tell a lot of love and dedication went into making sure it delivered for the fans so I applaud it for what it is. I just wish there was a bit more to chew on in terms of character development and plot.
