The more unbearable The Drama got, the better. There's an extreme amount of anxiety here, especially in the second half, that I was there for. That's my thing. That's what I like. That's what I find funny (see anything Safdie-related, and Lanthimos at his best, too, if you want modern directors who are doing that kind of thing well). Add Kristoffer Borgli to the list, maybe. This was a little better than his last movie, Dream Scenario, which I also liked quite a lot, so I'll have to check out Sick of Myself. Dream Scenario was like a psychological comedy, and The Drama is like a rom-com colliding at high speed into a psychological drama/thriller/borderline-horror movie. It takes a little while to find its footing, but then it builds well once it does. It peaks in the final act, but I imagine it would've been difficult to end a movie like this. Borgoli doesn't really stick the landing, but at least the ending doesn't ruin the movie. You're just waving this high-intensity wave, and it doesn't come crashing down quite like how it should, at the end. Almost, but not quite. Still, it's a good ride until then. If anyone has seen Sleeping Dogs Lie (not really recommended, but it is brave), then this is like a slightly less gutsy but also more entertaining spin on that kind of story; a relationship between two soon-to-be-married people being tested when a difficult thing about one person's past is revealed. Zendaya is great in the first half, and then Pattinson largely dominates the second half. Both are great. Alana Haim is also really good here, in a supporting role. It's also great to see Pattinson rebound after two movies in 2025 that were misses, in my eyes (the frankly kind of awful Mickey 17 and the ambitious but super flawed/frustrating Die My Love... Die My Love also had some real relationship drama and a messy wedding, so maybe it would be a good double feature with The Drama if you like Robert Pattinson and are also a sicko).
